Né à Paris en 1946, de père brésilien, c'est à travers un cheminement autour de ses racines portugaises que Fabian da Costa s'est d'abord intéressé à l'image, fixe ou en mouvement. Après une licence de portugais, un certificat d'études cinématographiques et un apprentissage pratique dans le cadre du laboratoire audio-visuel dirigé par Jean Rouch à l'E.P.H.E., il obtient sa maîtrise avec la réalisation d'un film sur le travail du dernier maître sonnailleur du Portugal. Suivi d’un DEA en art Byzantin à l’E.P.H.E. Passionné d’ethnologie il suivra parallèlement les cours dispensés au Musée de l’Homme à Paris par Jean Guiart et parallèlement les séminaires organisés par Robert Jaulin dans le cadre de l’UER d’Ethnologie et d’Anthropologie de Paris VII . Il suit aussi l’enseignement d’ethnomusicologie donné par Claudie Marcel Dubois au musée des arts et traditions populaires (MNATP) situé alors a près du jardin d’acclimatation à Paris. Tout son trajet professionnel sera d'ailleurs jalonné de tournages de films sur les métiers traditionnels ,les artisans d'art et les musiques traditionnelles. Lauréat de la dotation Kodak Grands reportages, il entame une série de voyages en dehors de l'Europe, puis, envoyé à Brazzaville au titre de la coopération, il occupe le poste de responsable de l'audio-visuel au Centre Culturel Français où il réalise un documentaire multimédias sur Les Peintres de Poto-Poto. De retour à Paris, parallèlement à un travail professionnel de réalisateur de diaporamas dans le cadre d'une grande entreprise, il étudie les possibilités de la séquence photographique comme écriture visuelle. De 1974 à 1978 il participe à l'aventure du documentaire en Super 8 sonore avec une Beaulieu dans le cadre de l'atelier de cinéma qu'il dirige au Centre Culturel Censier. C'est pour lui l'occasion de participer à un tournage de film pour une thèse d'étudiants en médecine sur la "Psychiatrie de secteur" avec notamment le dr. Lucien Bonnafé. De 1982 à 1985 il travaille comme réalisateur à l'Ecomusée du Roannais en Super 8 et en 16 mm. avec l'appui technique de la Cinémathèque de Saint-Etienne. C’est à cette époque qu’il rencontre Eric Montbel pour intégrer des musiques traditionnelles dans son film « Les grenadières ». Fabian da Costa devient ensuite principalement photographe d'illustration, spécialité qu'il s'attache à considérer et à traiter dans la tradition des illustrateurs des livres d'art et de voyages qui enchantèrent son enfance. Auteur d'une quarantaine de livres, ses photographies sont souvent accompagnés de textes écrits par son épouse Anne da Costa. De nombreuses expositions sont le reflet de cette oeuvre commune. Il est représenté par l'agence Gamma-Rapho Sa découverte des possibilités offertes par la vidéo numérique ( tournage fin 2003 d'un sujet sur des fresques avec une Sony PD 150) le remet sur le chemin du cinéma…il monte actuellement un film sur l’Inde et prépare plusieurs documentaires

After getting a Portuguese Master degree, a certificate of Cinematographic Studies , a practical training at the Jean Rouch's laboratory at the E.P.H.E. in Paris and a DEA in Byzantine Studies , he began to work as a photographer and documentalist. He is the author of more than 30 books and his photographs are often accompanied by texts written by his wife Anne da Costa. He has now many projects of documentary movies. * Fabian da Costa was born in Paris in 1946, of Brazilian father. His career path was punctuated with the shooting of films on traditional crafts. He has been twice the prize winner of the grant "Kodak great photo-reportage ". He then took several trips outside Europe and was sent to Brazzaville , in Africa, as a co-operator. There he was in charge of the audio-visual department at the French Cultural Centre. Back in Paris , he then both worked as a professional director of slideshows in a large company and studied the potential of the photographic sequence as visual writing. From 1974 to 1978, he took part in the adventure of documentaries in Super 8 with a Beaulieu sound in the cinema workshop he directed at the Censier University Cultural Centre ( Paris). It gave him the opportunity to take part in the making of a film for a thesis on the “Psychiatry of sector”. From 1982 to 1985 he works as a director at the Ecomusée of Roannais using a Super 8 and 16 mms. movie camera with the technical support of the Cinémathèque de Saint-Etienne. Fabian da Costa became then mainly illustration photographer. As a child, he was very keen on illustration in travel and art books and followed this tradition in his art work. He was the author of about forty books, and his photographs are often accompanied by texts written by his wife Anne da Costa. Many exhibitions are the reflection of that common work. Fabian da Costa is now settled in Drome, at the foot of Vercors, and continues his work there at the service of a nature that commands admiration and humility. From 2005 to 2012 he travelled many times to India with photographic purposes. His discovery of the possibilities offered by the numerical video brought him back to the cinema. He has now many projects of documentary movies . He is a member of the famous Gamma Rapho photographic agency.
